How to make a herbarium sheet

Oct 20, 2017 · The IU Herbarium was established in 1885 as a research museum that now holds over 150,000 dried, pressed plant specimens mounted on large sheets of acid-free paper with attached labels that record the original collection information, any subsequent taxonomic changes, and indicators of additional research done with particular specimens. The Atlas of Florida Plants provides a source of information for the distribution of plants within the state and taxonomic information. The website also provides access to a database and images of herbarium specimens found at the University of South Florida and other herbaria. The University of Michigan Herbarium’s wood collection (aka xylarium) contains more than 3,300 specimens representing more than 130 tree families, primarily tropical woods. Grad student curatorial project: U-M Herbarium begins digitizing its wood collection | U-M LSA Ecology and Evolutionary Biology (EEB) The ATH collection, a fully databased and representative archive of preserved plant specimens that supports the Herbarium’s research and botanical information delivery programmes, is comprised of more than 166,000 specimens that are pressed, dried and mounted on herbarium sheets held in the Collection Room, circa. 18,000 specimens that are preserved in 70% ethanol held in the Spirit Room, and 2,500 wood blocks. Although it is much easier to place multiple sheet numbers and barcodes on a mixed sheet, for curatorial reasons it is much better for these specimens to be mounted on their own herbarium sheet. These specimens create a number of curatorial problems for staff and researchers: Filing a mixed sheet with different species is difficult.
