Alport syndrome eye changes

Dec 13, 2019 · People with Alport syndrome also sometimes develop eye problems such as an abnormally shaped lens, which may lead to cataracts and/or myopia. Also present at times are white flecks scattered around the retina called dot and fleck retinopathy. Nephrotic Syndrome is a condition resulting from increased leakage of protein into the urine from the filters in the kidneys that produce urine from blood. With the loss of protein in the urine, changes occur in the blood that cause fluid to build up in the tissues of your body. Alport syndrome is a genetic disorder affecting around 1 in 5,000-10,000 children, characterized by glomerulonephritis, end-stage kidney disease, and hearing loss. Alport syndrome can also affect the eyes, though the changes do not usually affect sight, except when changes to the lens occur in later life. Blood in urine is universal.
